05:40████I added the FBAnon question to the Q&A poll again
05:41████iunno if it was answered yet, I missed a few Q&As
05:48████it was decided that we weren't going to ask it. What was the reason?
05:54████People being too scared to ask it live?
05:54████Iunno I'm not in MPK
07:27████Management will never bring back FBAnon.
08:17████it's too bad
08:17████it was a magical place
08:41████Welcome Joel to the last remnants of what used to be fbanon.
08:41████Others can add you to the political chat if that's your cup of tea
08:41████\o/
08:42████If it's US-centric I'll stay away, otherwise sure
08:55████Welcome Joel!
09:35████Jays post about Referrals pivoted to people complaining about the referral process being a negative experience for candidates and employees :0
09:36████hi welcome
09:46████Gabriel That is true tho
09:46████link?
09:46████It sometimes takes forever
09:46████Statuses don't update
09:47████last time I had to straight up relay messages from the recruiter to my friend because nothing was happening
09:47████and then he never showed up in the tool because reasons, not even sure if i would have gotten the euro euro bills if he was hired
09:58████Almost every time I've referred somebody, something has gone wrong
09:58████And every time, the recruiter acts like this is a special case and it never happens
09:58████Same here! It's so frustrating
09:59████I've almost given up unless it's a really strong candidate and now I sell the hiring manager on it first before putting in the referral. So they end up pushing for it too
09:59████(In Seattle) fuck it's hot today! It might even be above 60!
09:59████I reconsidered wearing my sweater
09:59████lol
09:59████it was almost 80 yesterday
10:00████Like I'd really commit such a fashion disaster as showing people my forearms
10:00████i could actually feel my skin burn for the first time in many many months
10:00████I'd get an HR writeup for making an arousing work environment
10:01████I referred an Eng manager. The recruiter suggested that she interview as a high IC and transition to manager once she got here. Then she failed the phone screen because she didn't know PHP well enough for a high IC position: -P
10:01████Guh
10:01████Left hand, meet right hand
10:02████I referred my phd scientist friend who does stat analysis on populations and how stuff psychologically effects them.
10:02████Was told we don't hire people like that
10:02████We damn well should
10:03████I escalated three times
10:03████Well, I guess I'm not that sure we need that
10:03████people who think about psychological effects?
10:03████nah
10:03████But I'm surprised we don't have sociologists
10:03████Assuming that's the kind of person you mean
10:03████Also surprising that we don't have a chief economist
10:03████I do know of one psych PhD who works here
10:04████Social psych I think. Not my field so that might make as much sense as "data bash rust engineer"
10:04████i wish we had someone who could say "bombarding women with a message on how to become pretty multiple times per day is bad for their mental health"
10:04████not good for the company though
10:05████But it's good for our financial health. That's proven over a century.
10:05████Showing car ads is bad for the earth.
10:05████"making these messages about how to become pretty look like they're supported from your friends is even worse"
10:05████Allowing republicans to show ads is bad for liberals
10:05████Referrals are horrible here. I've had problems with every referral, including a guy with his Masters in CS, way more accomplishments than me, published papers (I have zero), worked as a PE for years, but he's not technically competent enough for an initial phone screen.
10:05████Lots of things would be different if the majority of the company gave a shit about their values and not just here to get those stacks bruh
10:05████yep
10:06████Aye
10:06████Indeed
10:06████The conclusion of such an investigation may be to shut the site down
10:07████[character not printed in filing]
10:07████Last night I was watching a show on craftsmen in Kyoto and it made me realize I haven't been proud of any of the work I've done here.
10:07████let me reach my cliff first
10:07████I was proud of the things I made at Apple.
10:07████99% of posts are people talking about how beautiful they are and their vacations יין
10:07████i was proud of things i did at google for sure
10:07████coming in to the "lets try to copy snapchat as hard as possible" team definitely didn't help
10:08████I'm proud of some things I've done technically
10:08████And the fact that I've kept my job here for four years
10:08████The consequences of fb, I'm not so sure about
10:08████im kind of worried how people are going to look at me when i look for my next job when they see i worked at facebook tbh
10:08████I still think it's a good for the world in general
10:09████I think FB is a net positive for the world
10:09████But there is truth to what people on hn say
10:09████Connectedness is a good thing
10:09████what does that even mean though
10:09████But having it centralized and ad supported might not be
10:09████any other company by the time they reach our size has very real questions about their effect
10:09████not that we shouldn't keep thinking about it
10:10████Facebook as a diary that uses psychological triggers to keep me as a author is a positive force
10:10████If only the incentives and network effects were in place for things like diaspora to take hold
10:10████i spent 5 years at google and had my questions about privacy and surveillance but i never felt i was making people's mental health deteriorate slowly and over time
10:10████I have almost zero pictures or notes of my life pre-Facebook
10:11████all my pictures are on google photos, you know, a place where i can store my photos privately
10:11████and doesn't try to trick me int sharing them publically every day
10:11████pre-facebook was pre-cameraphone
10:11████Google photos has "X years ago today" and other features that were borrowed from Facebook.
10:12████But yeah there is a lot of overlap now
10:12████wait did you just say facebook invented x years ago today?
10:12████No, we probably borrowed it from someone else
10:12████timehop
10:13████just saying you can't attribute having digital artifacts to facebook rather than having a camera in your pocket every day
10:14████I wouldn't caption the photos and discuss them without FB though
10:14████They would be a collection of pictures that I never looked at again
10:14████I bet 99.99% of google photos can go in cold storage
10:15████99% of all photos can
10:15████the one thing i wish they would do is dedupe
10:15████The other 1% are in Facebook
10:15████At least that's the product goal
10:15████how often do you scroll back in fb? probably as much as i scroll back in gp
10:16████like 2-3 times a year
10:17████I get the "X years ago today" almost daily
10:17████I never understood why we backed off so hard on scientific psychology and sociology research after the social contagion study. I think we have an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to research in both fields which is arguably a million times more important than making the world more connected.
10:19████It's scary for a Comp yang to have that power and it may lead to "regulatory risk"
10:20████oh good, we're going after <13 year olds now?
10:21████zuck has been talking about that for a while
10:21████yeah it was gross the last time he mentioned it
10:21████I'm not streaming the all hands (missed the first 20 mins, and now I figure I should just watch the recording). worth watching then it seems?
10:21████i just tuned in too
10:21████but my friends are... less than excited about the ideas
10:22████@Mike someone commented in the Lori's gender bias post if we could explore getting high school teenage girls as interns
10:22████:|
10:22████hahaha. link?
10:23████im ok with hiring people, but targetting 11 year olds feels like tobacco companies a couple decades ago (and today)
10:23████like we're seriously saying "we have to hook them young" here
10:23████https://fb.facebook.com/groups/e/permalink/1466622773393901/?comment_id=1468740833182095 I'm sure it was a harmless comment, just thought it was funny
10:23████Shared a file
10:24████yep, doesn't make it any better
10:24████he has a point anyway. I think he meant like, are we looking into ways to get more women interested in STEM from earlier in the pipe than college, which is a valid question to ask
10:24████won't we get sued due to COPPA or whatever?
10:24████explicitly called out
10:25████as being a challenge for regulatory reasons related to age verification and parental consent
10:25████that intern program is not a bad idea at all. theres a big diffference between trying to bring other demographics into good jobs vs trying to get a billion 11 year olds sharing selfies
10:26████can't wait to see the leaks on this one
10:26████pssh that post already leaked days ago
10:26████yeah this will be bad
10:26████Shared an image
10:27████i thought i couldn't be less inspired than "lets copy snapchat" but they've managed to really outdo themselves here
10:27████i meant the leaks on this all-hands not the post
10:28████"Facebook wants to hook 10 year olds" thanks guardian
10:29████did he just accidentally say "recrap" instead of "recap"
10:30████Shared an image
