This is because it was something that WSJ cited. Leaked research showed that "Hiding Likes" had no effect on wellbeing, but we did it anyway for PR. The included examples of IS features to help with teen wellbeing and body image are the ones that the IG team said are the best to use they used these examples for Antigone's Congressional testimony. 0 They are broken down into two categories friction and interruption Please let me know if you want me to make any other additions and changes. CONFIDENTIAL PROTECTED BY CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT - MT-IG-AG-00230164 Cheat Sheet - WSJ Leaks + Testimony Profits Over People Meaningfu_l$ocial Interaction [Mfll o want to be clear, we do not put profits over ppl o our algorithm prioritizes content that ppl will find most meaningful o for most ppl, that's content from family + friends o before MSi, we prioritized content ppl found most relevant, which was mostly driven by engagement o switched to MSI in 2018, time spent on the platform went down by 50M hrs per day o we stuck w/ the change bc we felt it was the right thing to do for our users + their wellbeing o decisions like this, dearly not putting profit above ppl Hate Speech o we do not profit from hate full stop o hateful, divisive content hurts our business o pp! + advertisers don't want to see it or be associated with it o proactively detect 97% of what we remove vs 23% in 2017 o if we take down before anyone reports, much better, means fewer ppl see it o hate speech prevalence now 0.05% very small % but still too much - o proud of our progress reduced hate speech prevalence by almost 50% in last 3 months - o invested heavily in ppl + tech to help remove hate speech and harmful content c 40K pp] work on safety + security at FB; invested >$13B in teams + tech since 2016 Misinfo o always been lies inte rnet easier - o we're a sharing platform but don't want ppl to see fake news o we remove things that break our rules (Community Standards) o remove fake accounts often source of misinfo - o we remove voter suppression, Covid + vaccine misinfo any misinfo that leads to real world harm - o third-party fact checkers mark false dramatically reduce distribution o warning labels inform other points of view 0 misinfo thrives in the absence of good information o why we're focused on not only removing the bad, but elevating good authoritative info o Covid Info Center I >2B ppl have viewed authoritative info about Covid and vaccines ' >3.3M Americans have used our vaccine finder tool to get the Covid vaccine o Voter info Center -visited by 140M ppl ' helped >4.5M people register to vote, largest effort of its kind ' helped states recruit 100K poll workers PolarizinglDivisive Content o we do not amplify divisive content simply not true - o we do not optimize our systems to increase amount of time spent in News Feed explicitly don't give our teams goals around time spent O believe if we build a product that is more valuable, then ppl will engage more O been doing this for years, and believe it's yielded good results 1 CONFIDENTIAL PROTECTED BY CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT - MT-lG-AG-00230165 0 don't want polarizing content on our services o in contrast to promoting it via our also, go out of our way to reduce it ' consumers don't like it, and advertisers don't want to be near it o research shows that social media is not a primary driver of harmful polarization o political polarization in US been rising since 19705 well before FB/social media existed o in other Western democracies where social media use has gone up, we actually see political polarization declining o easy to blame social media for rising polarization but think we need to take a deeper look at our society to fully understand the root causes we want to be part of the solution our users have said they want to see less political content o so we're testing ways to reduce political content in News Feed lG's Negative Impact on Teen Girls o we want lG to be safe and healthy place for everyone especially young ppl - o in July, we started to default u16 into private accts when we they join IG (u18 in EU) ' if already on IG, we pushed them to make their accts private o going further, only allow advtisers to target ads to u18 based on age, gender and location I won't show teens weight loss ads o created new tech that allows us to find IG accts that have shown potentially suspicious behavior and stop those accts from interacting w/ young ppl Negative Body Image o I'm a morn of 3 teen girls impact of lG on teen girls very impt to me - o we did this research to understand problems so we can address them 0 our internal research reinforces the external research done by experts o social media can have both positive + negative effects (insights not new) o our data showed that teenage girls who ALREADY are dealing with body image issues: o 2 out of 3 found lG to be helpful or made no difference o 1 out of 3 felt worse we're focused on the 1 out of 3 did this research so we can make IG healthier for them - based on research, we've created several tools & features focused on health & well being, like: o friction make it difficult for ppl to engage in potentially negative behavior ' pop-ups: when someone searches for content related to eating disorders on IG, they'll see a series of pop-ups disrupting their behavior o instead of seeing the eating disorder content outright, they see pop-ups w the option to: o talk to a helpline volunteer o get info from orgs like Nat'l Eating Disorder Assoc o message/talk to a friend on IG o interruptions when ppl are passively using the app, we create interruptions to help them be more mindful of their social media use o currently building two new interruption features: ' Take a Break: a feature that allows ppl to set a session time limit to take a moment away from scrolling ' Nudges: encourages ppl to consider different content if they are consuming content that correlates with negative appearance comparison 2 CONFIDENTIAL PROTECTED BY CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT - MT-lG-AG~00230166 0 we want everyone to feel good about the experience they have on IG and our apps o even if one person leaves IG feeling worse about their body or themselves is too many that's why we do this research + have worked with experts for yrs o it helps us build the right products + feat. to make IG a safe + healthy experience for all users s FB ignoring or hiding its research that shows issues with the platform? absolutely not research informs everything we do as a company 0 we are proud of the work of our researchers o thousands of FB employees dedicated to improving our platform based on research o especially when it comes to safety and security o we are very transparent with our research and data o publish a lot of data in our Transparency Center, including quarterly CSER ' the public can see the same data we see on how we are doing on Hate Speech, Bullying, Suicide and Self-Harm, etc ' helps keep FB accountable 0 reason we do research in the first place is to identify problems, so we can fix them c bullying research led us to launch an automatic filter that screens out messages in IG that could be harmful c research into eating disorder content led us to create expert-backed pop-ups w/ helpline info that appear when ppl try to search for or share eating disorder content on lG o narrative that FB ignored or hid research on lG + teen girls bc we put profit over ppl not true at all c our research is very consistent with existing research on this issue o including from institutions like Harvard, Pew and Berkeley I social media can have positive benefits AND negative impacts not net positive 0R negative o We publicly released our research a few weeks ago shows that most teens have a positive or neutral experience on IG o but even if a small % of users leave IG feeling worse about themselves, we don't want that o We don't want anyone to be negatively impacted by their use of IG or any of our apps 0 it has been a driving force behind all the products and features we've created and continue to create to help teen girls and others have better mental health and body image CONFIDENTIAL PROTECTED BY CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT -
